Collage Reliquary

Reliquary number 71, 2002

Collage is a technique of creating a composition of materials and objects by pasting them over a surface.  It can result in a juxtaposition of dissimilar objects in interesting and unexpected ways.

Picasso and his friendly rival Braque, first glued bits of wall paper and newspaper onto their canvases in 1912.  The Parisian art critics were not amused and named this new technique “collage” from the French “coller”, which means to glue.

Starting in 1994, I set a goal to make 100 collages.  They were all two-dimensional until I reached number 70 when I began pasting paper, gold, and postage stamps on wood.

Thank you for reading this. . . Nancy
